At the moment i am using a reed switch to count turns. I was thinking of switch to a hall effect sensor and digital counter but when I went to the electronics store they no longer stock the counter or hall sensor. The saleman said that a digital tachometer may work.

This is the one (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=QM1448&CATID=&keywords=tachometer&SPECIAL=&form=KEYWORD&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=&Keyword2=&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=) It seems to be an expensive option, but do any of you think it could work?

A digital tach won't work... you need absolute turns count and a tach can only count in approximations.
