I have it on good authority that Mark Knopfler used to skive off school with an ex-colleague of mine and a few others - they used to sit in Mark's bedroom and muck with guitars.

Me? I would hide in the airing cupboard then go and play in the woods or light a fire on the beach or over the allotments...

Clapton used to be god, then he made alot of money and decided that when you have a real whole lot of money you don't have to play like you mean it anymore and people will say you're god just because you're playing, so he's been demoted to "used to be God." I don't know who god is now, alot of people thought SRV was but then if you're god how can you die? ooops on that one. I think probably the devil is in charge now disguised at Britney Spears, I liked him alot better when he was tuning guitars down at the crossroads and writing blues tunes. confusing days we live in now.......thank god whoever it is for tubes still being around......

It wasn't that long before MTV. MTV debuted in 1981, and although the first Dire Straits album was released in 1978, Sultans of Swing entered the American charts in 1979. I remember thinking he was a good guitar player, but it really didn't fit into the music scene back then!

Their 2nd album, Communiqué came out in 1979, and then Making Movies came out in 1980.

I do recall Making Movies having quite some airplay on MTV with Skateaway, and Expresso Love. :D

USA Network used to show a lot of interesting music videos in the early 80's. Then they got really bland after that!

I remember the music concert shows, like In Concert, Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, and Midnight Special in the 70's. Originally they showed live concert footage (I was at the Grand Funk concert filmed for In Concert), then by the late 70's they started showing all music videos. BORING!

Interestingly the Beatles made a few music videos back in the day.

Somebody pointed me at a book on Amazon and I ended up surfing books on sexual politics. One of the surprising ones proposed that decadence is driven by women in the US and the West. Instead of being vilified, they're what's happenin' now. I pondered it for a while and concluded that the author might be onto something. Decadent men die pretty quickly - John Belushi, Chris Farley, et al. Decadent women seem to be propped up as idols by the media - Paris Hilton, et al. Fundamentally, Paris Hilton is a famous consumer. That's what she does. Because of the money, they let her do a little of this and that...now she's a model, now she's a reality TV pop tart, now she's a singer...:confused: . Pull up a picture of her mother...she's better looking than either daughter, so it's not about looks. Seems like decadence to me.
