Taller HB bobbins?

I was messing around with some pickups someone gave me. I think most of them came from various Fenders. Two of them are hot wound humbuckers. They have studs in both coils and ceramic magnets. I thought they would be fun to rewind, so I stripped the wire from one of them.

I notice the bobbins are quite a bit taller then the usual Gibson style, I assume to allow more wire to be wound. They are the full hight of a StewMac bobbin...plus the magnet/base plate underneath. I'm going to wind some 43 wire on these.

So... my question is, does anyone make taller 'bucker bobbins like this? I know there are different spacings, but I haven't seen different heights.

The Guitar Jones 49.2 mm ("G-spaced") bobbins are taller than average, certainly taller than the Stew Macs, and by about the thickness of the top or bottom flat parts, ~1/16" I would guess.

On a more practical level, I can get about 5.6k worth of #42 wire on these bobbins whereas I'm really pushing it at 4.7k on the Stew Mac bobbins.

That's about what I get on the StewMac bobbins also.

SK had some weird bobbins he sent me that I didn't even order once. the taller ones make the pickup brighter..........

That's what I figured... between that and giving me room for more wire I could get a pretty hot yet bright pup.

I might replace the studs with alnico slugs and see how that sounds too.

I've been kicking the idea around a little bit too.

No, its going to be a bright pickup no matter the turns, inductance is always going to be lower on a taller coil, more winds it gets less bright but still is going to be on the bright side.

I did some experiments with trying alnico rods in a humbucker size pickup but just as a single coil, you're limited by the amount of wire you can get on one of those things, never got anything that sounded good enough to sell, all too bright and edgy, not my style....

Those sound like bobbins that can be sourced thru WD Music Supply. Quite a bit taller than "typical" and taller than GJ bobbins. Plan on buying a large qtty and waiting 3 months.

Yikes... good thing I'm not really all that interested in making humbuckers!
