He died last night on the table at a local pet emergency room, with me and my dad by his side.

His real name was Bearchien, but we always just called him Bear. Nearly twelve years old, he's been my buddy and companion on nightly walks for the last ten.

I've been trying to make myself feel better by imagining that he's still out there roaming around in our cyber parking lot, and strangely enough it actually helps a bit. But damn, I really do miss him something awful.

You have my most sincere sympathy.

My pets mean a lot to me, and every one I have lost over the years was painful. I lost a cat I had for 20 years a couple years ago. His picture is right above my bench. We were best pals, and he followed me around just to hang out. I miss him. Our current cat also follows me around and wants to get involved with things. I worry to think he might out live me and he'd be alone with the wife. He is our kid since the real one grew up and left home. My sister had a pair of dogs for 16-17 years and lost them a few months back. She is still depressed.

I know what friends they can be and what joy they bring. I am sad for your loss.

My sincerest condolences. Pets are awesome, I've lost a few through the years and it hurts bad. Keep the memories. You'll find another companion but they never really replace the one that's gone. They are all unique.

Very sorry to hear that! I'm an animal person myself. :(

Aww, Man. My condolences, and a (manly) shoulder squeeze. Been there more than once. No platitudes other than, 'remember the joy.'

Animals can be better friends than most people. I've lost a few special friends as well and I miss every one.

I hope you will always remember the joy he brought to you and smile when you think of him.

He's still out there, tboy - lighting up someone else's life, now that his time with you has run its course.

I made a real connection with a dog yesterday, for the first time in a long while - and now if I found out that something had happened to him - after spending two hours with him - I know I would be devastated. Twelve years... it will get better, slowly but surely. The pain will fade, but the memories won't.

Truly sorry for your loss,
Ray

Been there too. One thing that you might be able to be glad about, is that you were always there for him, his whole life. I mean, imagine how it would suck for him, if you were suddenly gone, and he had to live the rest of his life without you around.

The shelters are packed with dogs looking for a friend.
