Coil Winder?

I would like to build a winder to wind pickup and inductor coils.

I have seen the Schatten coil winder, but I think it is expesive for what you get, plastic housing and tiny little motor. http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tools/Special_tools_for:_Electronics/Schatten_Pickup_Winder.html

I have seen homebrew versions that use a power drill, but I am thinking I would like something different than this.

I have seen the coil winder plans in "Build a Universal Coil Winding Machine" Daid J. Gingery http://www.lindsaybks.com/dgjp/djgbk/coil/index.html The plans have good concepts, but the project seems very low quality.

I appreciate any comments or suggestions anybody might have.
