Crybaby Volume pedal mod help needed

Hey all,


I have an 80's Crybaby with a ton of mods.
I'm trying to do the volume pedal mod as per :

Lifting the earth connection of the 4.7µF capacitor will cancel the wah effect and leave you with a volume pedal.


I'll hook up a mini switch on the side of the pedal to toggle between Wah and Volume - I just can't seem to determine which of these caps I need to disconnect from ground to turn the pedal into a volume pedal.
Any help would be appreciated.

What's that orange tantalum capacitor on the left beneath the inductor?

I've never done this mod, but SP has correctly pointed out the right cap. The orange tantalum is what needs to be ungrounded. It may be a 3.9uF or a 4.7uF, but it is the one reffered to in the instructions.

By the way the two caps that you have marked as .022 should be .22uF's.

Ok that was easy for you guys. Same question harder version...

'would like this pedal to become a volume pedal when bypassed. Currently, I made it true bypass with a 3PDT switch. Sorry I wish there was a schematic for this.

On the LED side of the switch have centre lug ground then LED and resistor to positive on the active (wah) lug. The reamaining lug which would be shorted to ground in bypass mode would go to the -Ve end of your tantalum capacitor.

Good luck is right! Is this a 535Q pedal?

I don't know how these work, but with the coil on the board I would guess that it is the standard vox/crybaby circuit with added features. Reverse engineer the basic wah part and find the 4.7uF cap to ground in the LCR filter and follow the instructions regarding the volume mod. Of course you will lose the true-bypass feature if you use the footswitch to make the change over.

Yeah this is likely beyond me for now. It is the 535q and I just bought a 2'nd non-chrome one- without all the mico-components and she seems to sounds better.
Perhaps a good idea would be just to get a standalone volume pedal, passive or otherwise. I'd love to jam a tube inside of it with a cathode folower feeding the pot. Because you DONT want much gain perhaps so lower voltages would work. 12dw7 with 24V (from those 12V $ store batteries) on plate and 3 AAs for the filiments? ADA used 5 Volts remember.

With the Dunlop 535, from the fully-up position and for about 20% of the sweep there is little sonic change. I tried resetting the gear to start above that point but there is no change. Is there anything a guy can do here? Add a 200K resistor across the Hotpot? I wish there was more range to the sound as in full depth through to full highs without trading one for the other. This particular wah has 3 IC and 4 transistors and normal components vs microparts as in the former one pictured above. 6 position sweep switch with caps. Pretty good pedal though overall - best of 10 different brands and/or models I played through. Anyone else prefer the wah near the end of the single chain?
