View Full Version : A question about Sunn amps

I wanted a guitar head that would be loud and most people I talked to suggested sunn, I’ve heard some bands that have used sunn and I really like the sound.
My question is what would be the best model (I would like to go for a tube)? I'm looking for loud, raw, and heavy. Also what should I expect to pay?
Thanks in advance,
Dave

I prefer any of the Sceptre-style amps, with the mid boost switch. My main guitar amp is a Sentura II. Expect to pay $300-$500 for one.

I agree...The Sceptres are good, solid, raw & warm & powerful. Also, the Sunn Solarus and Sentura fall into the same category (there are 40 and 60 watt versions....both are loud) and, of course.....The Model T (very loud....almost too loud to the point where you would have to be in a stadium to really crank the amp up and get a good overdriven tube sound). But all of these are raw, powerful, tight, warm-sounding amps with great low-frequency response.

for guitar I'm going to agree on the model T
but you might like a Marshall, Egnator, or Bogner
amp better.

I believe I may have a few Sunn schematics if there's any interest. I bought a 70's Sunn
six-10 cab Eminence loaded before disco ruined live bands........they had some horn loaded cabs like 2-12s mounted mid cab .....very loud as my ears would tell you now.

Here is a loud Sunn amp...1970 1200S with mid-boost, 6X12's, 4X6550's, dual GZ34 ractifiers. Wonderufl amp. good tones at low volumes, big tones at volume.

The sunn amps were not so bad if all you need is clean.
They are actually pretty well made.
Great for a bass player.
But no real overdrive to speak of. Just clean.
would make a cool project for modification.

You can also look on Schematic Heaven and find a bunch of Sunn drawings.

ENzo, thaks for making me go back to the Schematic HEaven. Someone must have added 1200S schematic fairly recently.

Not to speak heresy here, but from your description, it sounds like you would like a HiWatt amp too.
