May 2005, it was $1.50/lb US, now it costs $4/lb US.

That's because the price of copper has gone through the roof.

Anybody know if there's been a hike at MWS wire too?
Hello...
I'm told that the price of metals in general is only going to go higher, so if you have a good wire vendor buy now. I'm thinking about buying a case of wire myself, wire doesn't go bad and it's not like I'm not going to use it. I just hope
I can afford it.
Even aluminum is expensive now - the local scrapyard now wants almost $1.00 a pound just for scrap aluminum plate to make tooling with.
I'm starting to think the guy from Australia who makes pickup winders out of 'found parts' really had the right idea.
Ken
Hi Ken,
It's crazy alright and I heard the same thing about the prices of metal. I got the following two quotes for an aluminium plate here in Australia:
280mm x 340mm x 10mm (thick)
1. AUD$280
2. AUD$500
I thought there was something wrong with my hearing or that they misunderstood the dimensions. I'll be looking elsewhere ofcourse, like I should have in the first place.
Regards,
Michael

Looks to be about the same here, £66 + VAT for 2.5kg of 42 A.W.G. P.E. (£91 with VAT & delivery).
£2.25 for a pint worries me more - doesn't last long.

You mean Down Under a piece of aluminum 11 inches x 13 3/8 inches x .400 inches is $280AUS? What kind of Al was it - airplane duralumin (extremely lightweight anticorrosion) alloy? It would be almost cheaper to get it from the USA and have it shipped to you.
I am extremely fortunate - in the general area here there are large fire truck manufacturers and also machine shops, so if I want metal I can go to the salvageyard and prowl. I only buy aluminum scraps, and still it's almost $1.00USD a pound. I bought a 6" x 6" 6061 (plain Al) square tube five feet long today for $12.00 USD, and considered myself extremely lucky.
Stainless is even worse too, I'm almost afraid to ask how much 'good' toolsteel is.
I called my wire seller and they told me they would call me back in the AM with a quote - they are probably hoping I'll have had a sleep and in a good mood before they hit me with the price.
Ken
I just got quoted $45 aussie plus GST , for a piece of alloy plate that size ,
Mick
I was listening to the radio this AM while driving downstate to a flea market (my favorite place to shop)... and I heard that the Chinese are now buying all the aluminum they can find, so the prices are up. I saw a recycling center on my trip
that was paying $.80USD for a pound of empty beer cans, I can't remember ever seeing the price so high. Usually it's $.35 or so.
I'm worried, the price of all metals is bound to go up from all of this. I have a list
of all the tools that I want to make in the next year, so I am buying my metal now while prices are relatively low.

Thanks Mick, just got a quote for that price.

Ken, they probably just quoted the most expensive type of aluminium plate they had.

Yep, same here. I buy about ten pounds a month of plain enamel, formvar, and about 30 pounds of Polysol every six months or so.

are you all in the US or out of the US?
maybe it has to do with volume-

I'm in the US. MWS wire is who I have been using. I like their thicknesses on different types of wire better than others.

Looking at these charts:
http://www.kitcometals.com/charts/copper_historical_large.html#1year
I see that the price of copper has started to drop as surpluses are rising. It may take a couple of years, but I think the price of copper might drop back to 1/2 of what it is today.
Cool charts...
I think the reason the price of copper went up so fast is China was buying up
all the metals they could find, so speculators warehoused as much as they could hoping the price would go higher. Now that the Chinese aren't buying so much, the speculators are trying to sell before the price drops below their buy price. According to those charts, copper will drop quite a bit more before New Year's.
This is good for us, kinda. Pickup wire being as fine as it is is very difficult to make, so it will always be more expensive than other copper products. I'm not sure how much the price of copper will impact the price of finished wire, but I'm hoping copper wire drops to say $20. a pound and that the price of cobalt drops so mags are cheaper too.
Now all we need will be cheaper Forbon...

I track copper prices at Home Depot, the 250' 12AWG rolls were $19 for years then shot up to $130 this summer. Last I checked they were back down to $65 and dropping. I thinks it's partly the overheated construction market from earlier in the year (now tanked) and perhaps the military too, -there was some kind of war going on last I checked...

Yeah I was going to say that its probably volume of purchases in your case Jason, as far as why you haven't noticed the pricing as much. I'd guess you probably get more volume than any other single person on here.
