My kingdom for a plastic Phat Cat style cover

I've probably asked this before, but does anyone make something like this? And I don't mean those ugly no-hole square-like ones from Allparts. Nice and glossy with rounded corners like a regular P90 cover but in Phat Cat/Fat Bastard dimensions.

Unfortunately I don't know what they are made of. I only saw then when looking for the H-style (making Gretch/TV Jones style 12 screws pickups) covers they carries. I *think* that they might be plastic, but I really don't know. Maybe you should drop that a line and ask.

They got some great looking (in picture that is, still haven't tried them either) standard P90 plastic covers in chrome and gold.

The H-style covers are really great quality although they are brass. Not so big deal as eddy currents are minimized with those covers anyway.

He spent a small fortune making casts of every single possible part of a pickup, plus had made several designs of his own (Dogbuckers, Dogear Rings).

He's the most sold european oem pickup supplier for high level custom made instruments at the moment, and I think he deserves it; his pickups are great sounding and there isn't a cheap-made part in any of them.

If I was you, I'd make a mould from the inside of a regular P90/bucker cover and then vacu-form over it. You'll get the rounded corners and you'll be able to polish the plastic with automobile glass polish.

Spence, at some point I'm going to have to get into molding my own parts not only for these covers but for taller humbucker bobbins too. Yours is the long term solution but I don't know my butt from a broomhandle when it comes to vacu-forming anything. How's the learning curve and start up costs on that?

Kojak, yeah, like those GFS's, but maybe with even rounder corners. GFS stuff is so cheap I've seriously considered buying the pu's just for some of the hard (impossible) to get parts some of their designs have, but I don't know that my customers would be happy with the upcharge. I've also heard of Haeussel and his innovative parts fabrication. Does he sell anything like that?

Wolfe had shown a bunch of pickup parts that he was going to get, some looked like GFS stuff... probably from the same factory.

It's not that hard and it's very quick to do. You can get a cheap vacu-former very easily in the US. I got mine from the US for $60.

Dingwall basses uses vacuformed covers on their pickups. They were planning on going with epoxy cast pickup in a rubber mold though because the vacuform didn't hold their logo well, but for smooth covers that's a great idea.
