  • Can a Tube Socket Be Repaired?

Just bought a Harmony H305 for a hundred bucks. Orginal Jensen 12 speaker, 2 12AX7's 2 6v6's. Within the last couple of years it has been recapped and retubed and also had a 3 prong cord installed.

It was not working when I bought it and I found one of the spades in one of the phase inverter socket was broken. I did not have any luck soldering it back together but tested the amp with a jumper wire from that pin on the tube back to it's intended circuit. Can the little metal connectors be bought or will I have to replace the whole tube socket which I would rather not do?

I am getting near instant distortion when I dial up the treble knob from zero too.

Still looking for a schematic, the one on the baffle is about 30 Percent gone. May have to reverse engineer, but at least it is a simple amp with no reverb or tremelo. It has great tone when clean and when the tubes are overdriven. Perhaps only loud enough for a coffee shop without being miked.

    Thanks

    ENB

Socket replacement is definitely in order, whether you want to change the socket or not.

Schematic Heaven has several Harmony amps in the H3xx series, maybe one is close to yours.

"Loud enough for the coffee shop" with 2- 6V6 is DEFINITELY a problem!

See a previous thread re the h305
            http://forum.ampage.org/forum.php?cmd=vt&tid=3507
            See h306 schematic

Agree with comment in the thread that it might be best to rebuild it to 5E3 schematic, but use the 6G3 tone/vol arrangement for much better control (assume you've got vol/tone controls for each channel). The H306 has grid leak bias throughout the pre amp, it sounds better with proper cathode bias
The old Jensen P12R in my H306 sounds phenominal BUT the green glue holding the voice coil former on to the cone was failing. I managed to reattach mine using rubber loaded loctite superglue.
However great they sound though, P12Rs are very inefficient speakers (maybe 94dB/watt, probably less), your amp will be a lot louder with a 100dB/watt speaker such as a Celestion Blue, G12H30, Vintage 30, or a new Jensen C12N.
And yes it's a shame but the tube socket has to go, they are a cheap low quality type, so any replacement should be an upgrade. Peter.

I will drop in a vintage 30 and see how it sounds. Doesnt seem to be a bad little amp. Thanks for the advice
