  • What EL34's for MusicMan?

So, what EL34's you guys running in Music man amp that can take the brutal pounding the 700v Plate voltage?
Yeah, I know they run the screens low, just asking opinoins!
Loose/intermittant sockets probably helped kill the JJEL34L's that were in it.

Well ages ago I used some Svetlana's which took it ok but I gather the ones you had in it (JJ EL34L) are probably one of the best.

The Sylvania's are 6CA7s and sound way different than the thin bottle EL34.

The MM amps are thier own animal as far as sound goes. But in a standard output section a'la Marshall the American "fat bottle" 6CA7 is brighter and cleaner...more like a 6L6. The european skinny bottle EL34 is a tad darker with more midrange fur and breaks up earlier. They look nothing alike and really don't have that much in common. The 6ca7 is a beam tetrode, the EL34 is a standard power pentode.

If you've ever played an old Traynor with those 6CA7's you can hear the difference.

Not yet, EH gets ripped for stealing classic tube names, but I recently tried their Genelex KT66's and thought they sounded very nice.

I have JJ EL34L's in my Lynch Box... they have 6L6 qualities in the tone... tighter punchier and more focused... still a wash or wall of sound if you will, like a classic EL34 Marshall tone.

I hear you on Music Man amps being a tone all thier own but in truth they are loosly based on Fender ccts from the old days. The idea being the MM are overbuilt and run like a Indie car.

                      Cheers
