  • metronome like ticking sound in GK 200 RG

I own a Gallien Krueger 200 RG {yes guitar, not bass} head.I have begun to notice a ticking sound at high gain levels especially noticeable,or made more so by turning the treble up anywhere in the circuit chain, either at the guitar, effects,or amp.I have unplugged everything except a raw plug and used headphones and it is still there.I have tried a different power supply socket in a different building. The ticking is a constant 52 bpm.All other sections of the amp perform normally.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Michael

ANy chance your cell phone is nearby?

I forget, does this model use the switching powr supply? (No power transformer, a small board on the end is the power source.)

      Gallien Krueger ticking noise...

Thanks for the ideas ENZO.I appreciate the quick response. It has no power switching capability. It is a huge trans former inside the amp,and is rated at AC 117v.It is a perplexing issue.I am going to move the amp to a new loaction away from the house completely and see what happens.I called a few places in Portland,OR near where I live and they of course didnt want to say anything at all about what I can check before I brought it in to them for diagnosis,{I suppose if I was in their shoes I wouldnt either}.I am very picky about the quality of my guitar sound, and there just isnt a better sounding solid state amp for my ear than this one,so I am gearing up for the repair cost.I will stipulate to them tho before i release it to them, that I dont want ANY chinese components used in the repair,as I have heard stories of breakdowns do to inferior quality.Either way it will probably be 100 bucks at least. But considering I only paid 2 dollars{yes,2,lol} for it at a garage sale because a lady said it was broken,{someone had removed the fuse, and its never blown one since nor gotten hot}I replaced the fuse, that was 10 years ago.I think I have made out like a champ.

Yes, take it to a different electrical environment. What you describe doesn't sound a lot like something the amp itself would do.

Don't get to hung up on "no Chinese parts." Your "American" parts could be counterfeits these days. Yes, there actually are counterfeit transistors on the market - lots of them. And for that matter there are damn few parts made in the USA anyway. Just because some truly junky stuff comes out of China, that doesn;t mean everything from there is junk.

Instead, why not ask the repair shop if they warrant their work - do they stand behind their repairs? Repair shops are not interested in seing the same repair coming back once it is done. It takes up time and is bad for the reputation. No one will knowingly use crappy parts.
