  • Mixing Magnets In A P90

What would be the effect of using a ceramic magnet and an Alnico magnet in a P90? Anyone ever tried it?

try searching, there was a big thread on mixing magnets in p90s only a month or 2 ago. dont remember if it dealt with ceramic and alnico, but i think it was atleast mentioned.

The bridge pickup that was stock on my PRS McCarty, made by Seymour Duncan, is made that way. One ceramic magnet and one alnico. I don't build pickups so I can't give you any tech data. It was a bit too much output for me and I replaced the set with a vintage style all alnico set.

thats interesting that Duncan did that. I had that idea of mixing magnets years ago then Wolfe tried it and I guess Leslie West or someone loved his pickup, I wonder if the Duncan guys read this forum :-(

          Wasn't it Rick Derringer?
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

Someone gave me a set of dog ears with ceramic magnets.I ordered some Alnico 5's from the Magnets For Sale thread to put in them, then I thought it might be interesting to only replace one ceramic and see what sort of tone comes out.I'll give it try when I finally put the pickups in something. Might sound good or like total crap, who knows.

I like to mix 5 and 2 on the bridge 90, 2 on the side facing the bridge to smooth the top end a touch.
