  • 100watt speaker

    Hello,
Curious bout what people think would be a good choice for a speaker with minimum 100watt power capability. For now lets say I'm using a Twin Reverb with one speaker and want to sound like Robben Ford. To be more generic lets say I want a good smooth blues tone w/ a tight lows and smooth high end.

Weber is a popular choice. The Celestion was used alot by Billy Gibbons. Eminence has many popular speakers rated at 150 watts and you can listen to sound samples on their site.

How do they sound? I dunno. I'm guessing you want a "known quantity" to avoid buying five speakers and selling or shelving the other four If it were me I'd try the Celestion first only because on the whole I tend to pick something from Celestion whenever I get to hear them side by side with other speakers.

The trouble with any of the "which speaker..." threads is that you get alot of opinions based on narrow perspective. And you'll know that. So you still won't be able to take the advice. Not to mention all the guitar, amp, player, etc. variables. It usually amounts to a lot of "Here's what I bought and I love it..." And that's never worth much when you're looking to buy site unseen (or would that be ear unheard)

Not too helpful and a bit cynical, I know. But I'm still looking for the right speaker/s for a project I finished a while back. I've tried four models so far. Project is on hold due to budget.

If you're really lucky Bruce Collins may see this. His speaker suggestions are based on real listening tests and he tests alot of speakers. He'd also pay attention to what you actually wrote. So it won't be "Duuhuude, I just stuck one of 'these' in my 'Chunk a Lot' and it sound AAHWSUM and crunchy"

Oh, And I wouldn't bother with the "speaker review" thing either. It's the same narrow opinions followed by a list of amps, guitars and gear the guy is apparently very proud to be using. And it never seems to relate to what your looking for anyway. After about two hours of that you'll be more uncertain than when you started and you'll be out two hours that your never getting back.

Yeah Chuck you're right... this is a tough thing to research aside from buying loads of speakers and trying them all yourself, with your amp, your guitar, your pickups, your ears, and your playing feel/style. I guess I'm stuck w/ the expensive rout. But hey I guess once I have a speaker collection I can use it for life to do comparisons.
