  • No sound from Vintage Deluxe Reverb

For no apparent reason, amp suddenly has no volume on either normal or vibrato/reverb channel. If you move amp, loud noise of moving reverb springs comes thru speakers, so there is strong amplicifation. But when you turn up either knob, no volume from either channel. Checked cables and two guitars on other amp so that's not the problem. Any ideas before I haul it to the tech? Thanks much for any help. Rick

Well, either you have a TWO dead preamp tubes (V1 & V2, first and second from right), or you have an open cathode resistor (820Ω) or shorted cathode cap on those tubes. V1 and V2, pin 8, share a common cathode resistor and cap.

    Sub the tubes first.

yep - sounds like dead preamp tubes to me.

Swapped out the preamp tubes and still no sound

If I crank up reverb pot all the way, I hear slight hum. But still, neither channel's volume pots give any sound (normal & vibrato) even when cranked wide open. It's never easy! Thanks for the tips.

You have changed the power tubes right ? Also try both speaker outs you may be in the wrong one. Make sure your speakers are ohming out right and your cable is good. Do you have a multimeter ?

Do have multimeter-just swapped out power tubes...

speaker jack is in correct...swapped out cable. still no sound. It was working fine. Sat a few weeks and when I turned it on, no sound from inputs. But it does make loud crash sound of reverb if you move it. Thanks!

              ???

He has clear reverb return. It isn't power tubes.

When it affects both channels I wouldn't suspect the tubes at first (2 at the same time going bad? - somewhat unlikely)
Do the tube heaters lit up? I would also have a look at V3 since all you know is, that the recovery of the reverb is working (due to the crashing sound).
Check the wires of the heaters and the plate voltages.

Swap out the first two pre-amp tubes first (cos that's the easiest quickest troubleshoot). If that dain't work, report back

                    The plot thickens...

Switched out and also did R-G, Short and gas tests on all tubes and all are fine. All heaters lit and appear normal. Flipped standby switch several times and got good pops from speaker. I get no volume on normal channel but now get constant low volume on the Vibrato channel, even when pot is at zero. Turning it makes no difference...still constant low volume on that channel. Thanks for everyone's help so far.
