  • Experiment - bypass 1st stage in 5F2a build.

I have been working on a close-to-stock design 5F2a build, and I keep feeling like it has too much gain, so tonight I connected the input (with 1meg load and 33k grid stopper) directly to the grid of the 2nd stage. I then played through it a little, and switched the 11mfd cathode bypass cap on that stage in & out.

With the cathode bypass cap in the circuit, the amp was darn near useable for late-night apartment levels. I am going to keep it wired this way for a while and try to dial on the sound of the power amp (maybe try different bypass caps there) and speaker (a couple of choices there, too).

It is interesting to hear what the guitar straight into 1 triode stage and 1 SE 6V6 sounds like. No VTMB at all BABY!

Today I installed a DPDT to switch the 1st stage and VT controls in and out. That 1st stage adds A LOT of gain.
