  • Eminence Beta 8 and other odd speakers for guitar?

I recently saw an Eminence Beta 8 speaker in my local Maplin, so I bought it to see what it would sound like on guitar. Eminence market it as a PA speaker, but after reading a recent thread on EVs, I thought I might like PA speakers.

Sure enough, it has plenty of upper mids and treble, but they seem to be smooth and clear rather than peaky and honky. It made some very nice clean sounds with single coil pickups, and the high end gave a pretty vicious grind to distorted tones.

The one thing I noticed was that it tended to emphasize string noise and squeaks especially when playing with high gain. But I just had it sitting on the floor. Hopefully when I put it in a cabinet, it'll bring the bass and lower mids up to counterbalance that. It sounded good enough that I fancy getting another one and making a 2x8" cab, especially since they only come in 8 ohms and my amps only has 16.

When I went back to my usual 2x12" it sounded so dull and honky in comparison. I usually end up using the EQ to scoop out a big notch around 400-600Hz, but the 8" didn't need that.

Anyone else try odd sizes and types of speakers for guitar?
"Enzo, I see that you replied parasitic oscillations. Is that a hypothesis? Or is that your amazing metal band I should check out?"

I've got a cab under the bench with 5x 5" and 1x 8" car stereo speakers in it. The cab is about the size of a 2x12 but deeper than normal and closed back. I built it out of castoff crap to use as a test load for amps on the bench, since it's switchable for 2,4,8,16 and 32 ohm. Surprisingly it sounds really good in 8-ohm mode, with all 6 speakers being driven. It's relatively quiet too, as none of the speakers has more than around 93dB/W/m sensitivity.

My 4x12 with 3 Alphatones and 1 McKenzie in it sounds better, of course, but the little cab is a pleasant alternative for cleaner sounds.
So B+ is the one that hurts when you touch it, yeah?

      Gents-

I bought a pair of 10" Eminence 'Neo' speakers, find them to be great musical chameleons. Feed them 6V6's, they sound American, feed them EL34's and you get Brit flavors. They're rated for 100W each but a pair gets driven pretty well by 40-50 watts. VERY efficient and light, a pair works well with an 18W amp too, they take little power to get them moving. Haven't tried the 12", but will when I see a sale :-)

      Rock on,
