  • Stacked Humbucker Balance Blend Question

    I have now wired up my custom telecaster with 1. a volume, 2. pickup balance blend and 3. a No Load Tone.

    Its works fine, however...

    The problem is, that when I sweep the balance pot towards the neck pickup (Seymour Duncan STK-T1n), there seems to be a distinct "low volume" point midway between the balance blend pot halfway mark (equal bridge and neck pickup blend) and the full neck position (no bridge pickup in the blend). Once the balance blend pot is fully towards the neck pickup , the volume is fine. The volume of the blend sweeping towards the bridge pickup does not appear to drop in volume like it does sweeping towards the neck pickup.

    N >>>>>(drop)<<<<<< N+B =============== B

    Please excuse my poor schematic but this is what I have done.

    Q. Why is it doing this? is it normal, or does it need a fix?

    Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

    it sounds like the two pickups might be out of phase with each other. The reason it might not show up at the center point is because the pickups are not equal in volume.

    Try flipping the hot and ground wires (but not the shield, assuming it's either a 3 or 4 conductor wiring, or 2 unshielded wires).
    It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

      Thanks David, I'll have a try at that later on today. I'll certainly repost whatever the outcome.

        I would concur with David. Just note that, even if the pickups were of equal volume/output, they are situated at different points, and may well be sitting at different heights. Not to mention the fact that "linear taper" is an ideal to which such pots aspire and don't always reach. For all of those reasons, the point of maximum cancellation between the two out-of-phase pickups might not occur until somewhere after or before the midpoint on the pot. It happens.
