  • Mesa Single Rec problems

    Hi all,

I have a Mesa Single Rec. 50 solo head and i'm having some technical difficulties.

Stupidly, yesterday on the first night of our national tour, i lent the amp to another guitarist and when i got back to the venue he said it wouldnt turn on.

So i checked the fuse and it had blown so i thought it would be pretty simple thing to fix. He must have just put the power on without warming it up properly and just got a voltage spike and run it over the fuse limit.

So today i replaced the fuse, switched on the power and then standby, and the thing shut down again...checked the fuse and it had blown.

So i though, ok, maybe it just needs to warm up a bit longer (although i've never heard of them overheating so quickly and with two fuses within a day). So this time i switch on the power- everything seems fine- then after about a minute (with the standby off) i hear a kind of crackling melting sound like solder being burned or something.

Obviously turned it off straight away.

I read up somewhere that the fuses can get blown if you short out one of the power tubes. Does anyone have any idea what i can do to fix the problem, and its urgent becuase i go back on tour tomorow.

Thanks anyone who reads or replies!

Bad power tubes are THE mopst common reason for fuses to blow in amps. The burning resistor - if there was one - was likely the screen resistor of hte bad tube. Pull all the power tubes out and fire up the amp. If the fuse holds and nothing burns, try new power tubes. Check all the screen resistors for open or shifted value.

The problem has nothing to do with how long it warmed up.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

I wonder if the guy he loaned it to "borrowed" your good tubes?
