  • How Do You Remove a Pup Cover

I only have a 30 watt iron. How do I remove a cover and Not ruin the Pup I want to Pot a aftermarket Pup.

I just cut them with a dremel using a "cutoff wheel"/shrapnel-anti-ocular device. Low speed. The solder is real soft compared to the cover and frame so it's easy.

Get an xacto razor saw and saw through the solder between the cover and the baseplate.

Go to Fred Meyer in their electrical section of their tools area, they have a 40 watt soldering iron that is more like 60 watts in temperature, for about ten bucks. This was my main soldering iron before I got a Weller station, its plenty hot enough to open a bucker cover. Here it is in action:

I don't recommend a Dremel as its too easy to do major damage or kill the pickup....

And remember; after you remove the cover, throw it in the trash! We don't need no stinking covers! They screw up the tone.

Nice video Dave! I like the sound track.
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein
