  • Can I make a 10k pot into a '20k'?

..or can I make a 47k pot into a 20k for eg? I can't get 20k lin mini 16mm pots, just 10k and 47k you see. I ask as I read someone tweaked a 470k pot with a 30k resistor somehow to get 500k. Cheers capt

To help you out it would be good to know just what sort of application and circuit you are needing the pot for. You're going to have better luck modifying higher values to lower than adapting lower values to work where you need a higher value.

wire a 33k resistor across the outer lugs of a 47k pot: =19.4k
      or a 39k in parallel with the 47k pot: = 21.3k

Aha thanks, but not poss with a 10k? (tiddlers needed- my 47k is a big' un) oh and its for a tubescreamer, I've only a 10k pot instead of a 20k (and a 470k lin for the 500k log too)- actually if anyone can say if these are ok/ they'll work I'be grateful. Capt

You could use a 10K pot with a 10K resistor on either side, or put a 5K resistor on each outside lug of the pot, which is probably your best option.

robs you off 50% on either side
            or 25% on both sides
            of operatable control-range, though...

You can scrape off carbon to increase resistance if you are stuck.

You can order 16mm 20k pots from a variety of places. I confidently recommend Small Bear Electronics. Though situated on the other side of the ocean, owner Steve Daniels is an avid DIY-er himself and makes a point of maintaining inventory pertinent to fellow builders/modders/repairers as well as supplying commercial pedal-makers. He also is well-known for providing prompt and frugal shipping to places that normally encounter difficulties either getting parts or getting them at livable prices.

BTW, what do you need a 20k pot for? That would help identify how to achieve suitable mimicry, should it come to that. Could I safely assume it is for a Tube Screamer tone control?
