  • Need Help with ID of Fender Strat PUps

    Hi,

I need help working out which Fender Stat coils these are - they were sold to me as 57/62s out of a re-issue

they are Formvar with Bevelled mags ... middle is NOT rwrp.

Wax potted ... noted that one of the bobbin geometries was different to the other 2.

    DCR are 6.20 6.45 & 6.49

I thought they might be Fat 50s, but they come with a blue and red dot to mark Neck and Bridge (I think) & they aren't Texas Specials (which have non-bevelled mags)

Most of the 60's re-issues have PE wire.

Maybe they are custom shop ...

    Any help greatly appreciated

    Steve

I'd say Custom & from the Custom shop

That is a different odd DCR wind.
      They look narrow.
Can you measure the height of the winding area., In Inches preferably.

Sounds like good candidates for rewinds to me!
Don't see any specs there that I dig!

            Hi Steve

I think the person who sold you the pups gave you the correct description, I've got a set of those that came from 62 reissue and another set which I think came from a 60's vintage reissue from the custom shop. I think the 62 set has the more heavily bevelled magnets and also red (dark pink) mark on the edge of the bottom pup bobbin. The bevel on this set leaves about 3.4 mm flat on top of the magnet. Both sets have 11mm between flats and all same polarity and wind direction. All the pups are around the 6k mark except the bridge pup on the less bevelled set which is 6.3 on my extech meter. Dc resistances can be unreliable Temp frequency etc. I've got 3 meters and they all give different dc readings on pups. I hope it's of some help.

            Cheers

            Andrew

What you have, is nothing like published 57/62 Specs.
              Here's fenders specs.

                Hi Big Teee
I wouldn't take to much notice of Fender listed specs, also Steves meter might not be up to scratch.

                Cheers

Good point, I will double check with another meter ... but would you expect to see 200Ω difference between a set that should be identical ?

... have you seen other Fender pickups that are well outside (ie +15%) from Spec. Is it possible that these were ordered to be "hotter" ?

                    Hi Steve

Run a hair dryer over your pups for a couple of minutes and see what happens to the readings. Most commercial pups are wound by the amount of turns so varying wire tension etc can easily put the readings out. Things these days are produced to be cheap accuracy comes way down on the list of priorities.

                    Cheers

                      Hi Andrew,

I'm aware that PUps change DCR with heat (ie noticible difference after pulling out from wax bath) but to get a 600Ω difference it would need to be significantly warmer in my house (about 20 celcius) than the Fender factory. Maybe they make the pickups at -120celcius in Corona

Here's a pic with my multimeters side by side.

                      57/62s are nominally 5.6kΩ and 3.0 Henries

Nice looking pics, and nice gear.
Does it really matter what exact model they are?
They are good looking pickups, and I would play them, If I didn't like the way they sound rewind them.

In this case I specifically sought out and paid (extra mind you) for the 57/62s that were reverse engineered from an original L series pickup. I know the technical specs of the 1963 Fenders ... but I wanted to test this model and look more closely at Fenders take on the originals.
