  • WEhy no switch mode power supplies?

I am putting together a couple of stereo amps to drive 4 PA speakers at 100w per channel. I have not done this for a while but 20 years ago I did a lot. So I am rusty and out of date I have bought a couple of prebuilt D class stereo amps based on the TDA8920B chips. The modules are cheap and light because of the Class D circuit. Switch mode power supplies tend to be....cheap and light and that would suit me.

However the amps need split supply of +-22 V to get their 100W. I am really struggling to find any SM power supplies to suit or even say +-20V to go near. 50Hz trannies are both huge and $$. The other advantage of SW PS's is that they often deal with a wide range of input volts, like 120-240 etc. I need 240V.

I just want to get these amps built from modules if I can, because they are often so cheap, take less time and do not require me to catch up on 20 years of ageing, out of date brain.

So. Is there a reason for the dearth of SW PS's for audio work, or can some kind person point me to a place to find them.

    Any help appreciated

    Nick

you can easily use two ( isolated output ) SMPS and wire them to provide +/- voltage, thats what they do with the SMPS at Partsexpress that they use with some of their class D modules

I would consider upping the power rails to 27Vdc to obtain 100 watts output.
      (from the datasheet)
