i'll give a heads up on how good it really it is when it arrives. has anyone else seen these?

haven't looked into too deeply, but it also has the ability to interface with a PC......AND it can be powered from an external 9VDC supply

    Fab,

I bought one of these direct from Japan. It is a very good quality LCR meter, but I paid about 100.00 US for mine. You got an excellent deal.

Great price, actually the best price I've seen on ebay so I ordered one myself. If anyone else is interested here is the listing:

make sure (or don't forget that you'll need) to get the accessories you need as well (alligator clip leads adaptor, SMT tweezer style leads, world wide AC adaptor, etc.). Seems there are a number of people re-selling those (from a store in Japan) on ebay.

It seems to be a nice unit, and US $100 is a good price. One can get the manual online, from IET Labs (the inheritors of General Radio): http://www.ietlabs.com/pdf/Manuals/DE_5000_im.pdf

The DE-5000 is discontinued, replaced by the DE-6000 (list price US $335): Handheld LCR Meter- DE-6000 Handheld LCR Meter

On page 41 of both the DE-5000 and DE-6000 manuals, they give a simple equation for the effect of dissipation (the inverse of Q) on the indicated reading. Solving this equation for a typical case of a 2 H coil with a DC resistance of 10,000 ohms, one gets a reading error of about 40%. While one can mathematically correct this error given inductance, dissipation, and test frequency, it's a bit of a nuisance.

One can use the DE-5000 together with the Maxwell-Wien Bridge to measure the true inductance and dissipation values. Joe Gwinn's website homepage

+1 on making sure you get at least the TL-21 alligator leads adapter. You may or may not need the SMT tweezer leads and the AC adapter (since it runs just great with a single 9V battery) but if you want really accurate measurements you need the TL-21 which has the full 3 wire setup. Don't just plan to use a set of normal DVM test leads with this.

The DER EE DE-5000 does look like a nice unit, here is a teardown:

one poster mentions having a version with no battery polarity protection; he smoked his by inserting bat backwards! Caveat emptor!

they are all Iranian (?) but seem cool.

The TL-21 clip leads are going for about $23 on ebay with free shipping.

I didn't see any reference to Iran, do you mean Taiwan?

Thanks dai. Unfortunately I can't read any of that but it seems akizuki is a Japanese company. But would you happen to know if this unit is made in Japan or Taiwan?

Taiwan. Seems a number of the mid priced ones are made there.

Did anyone receive their meter yet? I am in an annoying scenario and trying to figure out what to do. I bought one off this ebay listing last Thursday, then realized I chose the wrong paypal linked bank account to pay for it. I canceled the order immediately after, expecting to hear back Friday or Saturday. I have been waiting to get refunded my paypal transfer. I got an email today saying it is too late to cancel the order and my meter will arrive by December 30th.

ANyone else have a similar experience? I know no one probably canceled their order, but how long did it take? So it takes almost a week to process my order and 3-4 weeks to recieve it, but I can't cancel the order within 5 minutes of purchase????????

I placed my order on the 26th, it had been handed over to the post office in Japan by the 29th. I don't know how long it will take till I get it.
