  • Potting of vintage Fender bass pickups

In 1962, did Fender use lacquer or wax to pot their Precision Bass and Jazz Bass pickups?

I rewound a 1963 Jazz bass neck coil and there was no potting.

My experience with Pre-CBS pickups has been, if the coil is wound with Formvar, it is wax potted. PE lacquer potted.

Historians will eventually show that unpotted Fender bass pickups were the root cause of the dramatic change in the sound of popular music between 1964 and 1969. You can't sing sweet harmonies over a snarling, screeching bass line. So the other band members started snarling and screeching too. Heavy Rock was born.

I've read a few times that they had used self bonding magnet wire in the 70s. That might be the ones that seem lacquer potted. Or maybe they are just lacquer potted.
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein
