  • Preamp Vs. Equalizer

Hey all, I was wondering what the difference is between a preamp and an equalizer. I am currently working on completing my bass rig which now includes: Line 6 Bass Pod, Carvin HD900 power amp, and a DBX 15 channel EQ. For now, I am using my POD as a pre-amp but would like to get something that is more specifically made for a pre-amp use. Now, my question is, is there a difference between a pre-amp and an EQ? Thanks for the help, also, if anyone could recommend a good pre-amp that would help out a lot too. Thanks again for the help in advance!

The EQ is a big tone control... period. It won't have any facility for cranking the gain for overdrive. No compression, no chorus, no DI output, no biamp crossover. It won't have actual tone controls - to achieve similar effect, you'd have to grab a bunch of sliders at once. May or may not have an effects loop, and likely will not have an input pad - usually marked "active" and "passive" on a preamp. Won't have a contour button. You'd have to scoop your mids or whatever by hand, and then restore it by hand. And as a line level device, the EQ might not be happy taking the instrument level signal from the guitar and trying to make a line level output from it.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.
