  • Charging AlNiCo bar magnets

    It was a long weekend, and I spent a big chunk of it in the garage winding coils. I had a big box 'o junkers that needed rehabilitation, including some cheapo humbuckers. Several of the bar magnets were pathetically weak, likely from how they were stored in with a drawer of ceramic bar magnets.

    Normally, I only charge rod-type polepieces with a 1" disc neodymium. Can I charge a bar using a row of neo "coins"?

    I tried placing it over a row of coins, but the bar seemed to end up with "tug" that varied greatly along its length. Is there some recommended practice I should follow to charge bars? Should I be using something other than a row of neo coins? Do I need stronger coins?

    OK, I know - dirty pool! Not everyone has $600 to throw on a DC charger.
    I've used Neo 52 mags like these with good results:

      I don't know about the row of coins. But when I used two large Neos in a vice sliding a bar magnet through never worked well. I made a little jig where I would push the magnet down and then bring it back up - so it was in, then out of the magnetic field at more or less the same time - as opposed to when sliding it through where I always got a very uneven charge.

          There's no substitut for a pulse charger.

          Having said that, the second best thing is to make a jig with a vise, gluing two N52s which are at least 3" x 1" x 0,5", being magnetzed through th 0.5".
