  • Kaputt coil?

Hi guys - I hope you can give me some help here .

I have a P90 from 1954-ish. When testing the coil for continuity with a Multimeter I don't get the usual response ("beep" => a short circuit or a "1" => OK) but instead I get a reading/a number (1,983). The PU works/sound OK and measures just above 7 Kohm.
Is this a coil that is on the brink to short out or is it OK?

    Please see the attached photo.

you shouldn't get a beep for continuity on a sound coil - there's too much resistance. the fact that you're reading just over 7K ohms tells you right there. if it sounds all right then everything is all right!

    cheers,

It's just that every other PU I tested (I've got several - too many) doesn't "show up" this way. It made me wonder.

      Thank you again

When testing pickups your meter should be in the 20k range for that meter. When in auto ranging your readings will show the resistance from your skin should you be touching the leads. Always use the range that best suits the job. The setting you are using has diode checking, hence the beep. (so you can quickly check without looking at the meter)
