Univox tape cartridge?

I was working on a Univox EC80 tape unit and need to get a new tape cartridge.
Any ideas where to find one?

I have actually made replacement tapes for those. The hardest part for me was replacing the little foam pressure pads, which break down and crumble.

That seems to be the common problem.
I replaced the pads, and will try the tape.
I cut out some of the parts that were disintegrating and spliced it.
If it doesn't work at least I can order another one.

I face the same problem getting my 8-tracks to work, too.
Don't laugh, some of them are really good obscure stuff that you can't always get on CD or vinyl anymore. On occasion I've used the pink foam that I sometimes get ICs in with some measure of success. You need to have a very sharp X-acto blade to trim the pieces to size, though.

I could cut it OK, but I ran into if it was too stiff it bogged the tape down, and if it was too wimpy it didn't provide good tape to head contact. For whatever odd reason, I always seem to have a variety of adhesive backed foam around the shop.

Dictaphone has no more of those. That Canadian place never contacted me back, although I wanted to order 6. (I have two EC80 and an EC100, all refurbed).

I finally found some brand new, still shrink-wrapped ones on Ebay. They were a bit expensive, but I figured worth it to get them working, since I only had about $50 total in the three units at the time, anyway.

If you find a Dictaphone tape cartridge, a mod needs to be done to it. You have to eliminate the right-most (as viewed from the tape opening) protruding "tab" at the tape opening, or it won't fit properly.

yes, unfortunately "Valerie" from dictaphone laughed and said they haven't sold the cartridges in a while......I'll try Ranger.

Rewind problem

I have tried rewinding with what was the original amount and way less, like maybe an eighth inch of wrap, and it keeps getting tight on the inner wrap to the point where it is too tight and the rubber wheel just can't pull it thru. Any ideas as to how to do it right? Thanks,

Rewind a Apollon HD-5000 for Univox Echo

Many questions in this thread about rewinding an tape cartridge for the Univox Echo Chamber.
Most old cartridges have feltpads that are completely gone (missing) or fel apart, full of grease and dirt. You can scrap them away with a small flat screwdriver. See that all of the glue is gone and clean the base with alcohol before to put some new feltpads. Feltpads can be made of foam.

The rubber wheel in the cartridge must NOT be cleaned with alcohol, alcohol is bad for rubber, if you want to clean it anyway, take it from the housing and clean it with dishwasher, rinse with clean water, dry it afterwards and put it back in the housing.

To let the spool run free, put the screw that holds the lid in place between the tension arm near the rubber wheel and the house of the cartridge.

Remove the old tape, remember the way is was wrapped.
Take a compactcassette, if possible take a new one, most times the 60 minute version is useable. The longer versions are a bit thinner and not useable for this work. Try to make about 100 windings, pull 1 metre (about 3 foot) from the inner circle to make space for running free, the first foot of tape you pull out will crinckle, that shows how tied your winding is.

When you make the connection of the loose ends make it as short as possible or else you have a loose winding what will cause trouble later.

Try to make the cut diagonal so it will fit without a gap, make no overlap.

Than put the free tape in its path and take the screw away from the tension arm, close the housing and test the rewinded cartridge in your echo.

If this will not do the trick you can always send it to me, I live in The Netherlands and have refurbished a whole lot of these cartridges.
