  • What amp did I just buy?

I'm pretty sure it's an Airline/Valco but I can't figure out what model. Click image for larger version

Those knobs scream Silvertone. I'd check those for one with a matching tube complement and knob setup.

Check the Danelectro amps too. Often there's major similarities between those and some Silvertones. A couple days ago I was able to find the schematic of a Silvertone I was working on by consulting the Dano charts - the amp had 2 x 12" speakers BUT its schematic matched that of a Dano 2x15 model.
This isn't the future I signed up for.

Are you in Portland? I swear someone had one of those on Craigslist for months.

          Yep! That's the one.

I did some googleing and found this: http://music-electronics-forum.com/t35680/

My head is very similar. The amp above is STEREO amp that was sold with stereo cab. Here is the schematic to the one above: http://music-electronics-forum.com/a...-schematic.pdf

The guy I bought it from was using it with one 8ohm mono cab.

Assuming mine is stereo as well (haven't opened it up yet) Is it possible that one side of the amp could have been damaged? The amp functions as is but that would explain why it's really quiet for an amp with 4 6L6 power tubes.

Is there a site that has all danelectro amps ever made?

The speaker jacks are stereo TRS jacks. Do you have it configured correctly? You would need a stereo cabinet wired one speaker to jack tip and one speaker wired to jack ring. You'd also need a stereo TRS speaker cable. Rather odd for a guitar amp.

Edit: You could also make a Y cable that is TRS on one end and splits to two mono 1/4" jacks that are wired to tip and ring of the TRS jack. Basically an insert cable made of speaker wire.
If the amp was mine, I might be inclined to reconfigure the amp so that the two speaker jacks were separate amp outputs and just use two regular speaker cables (instead of one oddball). Instead of "Speaker" and "External Speaker" they would be "Speaker A" and "Speaker B".

I have a 4x10 hartke cab I'd be happy to rewire with a stereo jack. It's currently 8ohms. The schematic I linked to said 8 ohms. This should be relatively easy to do right? An 8 OHM load on both sides. Need to open it up and see what the individual speakers are rated

edit: is it a bad idea to just use any stereo 1/4" cable I've got?

edit 2: each speaker in the cab is 8 ohms. so i assume i have 2 choices: 4 ohms or 16 ohms for this mod idea. is that correct?

It's bad to use 'any stereo 1/4"' cable if it's shielded cable and not heavier gauge speaker wire.
If the amp was run into a mono plug, it would have shorted out the one side. This is not usually a big problem with tube amps although it may have been hard on the power tubes on that side of the amp.

I rewired the cab with a stereo jack. I wired up the 4x10 to 16 ohms stereo. Both sides are working. I can't check to see if it's louder because the baby is asleep and while she loves guitars she's not into teeth rattling at night. From what I've read I can expect a lower output since I am using a higher ohm cab.

There is a slight random crackle on one side of the cab. Is that to be expected for the side that wasn't used in how ever long it's been?

I used a regular stereo cable and theres a hum now. Been googling but can't find a stereo speaker cable. I could make my own. What kind of wire do I need to get? Can I just use the 16 gauge speaker wire I use on the HIFI?

That's the spirit! You could use 16 ga speaker wire, but for the low power & short run you need 18 ga lamp cord would be fine and I'm sure easier to fit into a plug shell.
