  • Peavey Vypyr 60

    Hoo boy, 2 threads going at once.

    Peavey came in with 'magic smoke' complaint. Yep, if a jack gets loose & falls into the chassis - no surprise.

    Looking for the obvious (I'm getting better at that) I found 3 fried parts - 2 resistors & a cap. Just want to be sure I'm reading the 'bill of material' from Peavey right -
    R15 says 1/4W MF 1% 20K - is that metal film?
    R17 says 1/4W CF 5% 820 ohms - is that good old carbon comp?
    C25 says 1000 pf PE 5% - is that polywhatever?
    Not used to reading these abbreviations...

    Strangely no fuses blew...
    The story will continue when I get those parts...

    MF = Metal Film

    CF = Carbon Film

    PE = Poly Whatever

          Ha, local shop says metal film 1% resistor is 'military' & can't be had... such BS, easy to find online... 4 cents for a resistor & 7 bucks to ship...

            IMO, it's not that critical that the resistor be metal film. Also, if those components burned up, it's likely V1 is bad. I'd probably change that also. If you have a tube tester, check it for shorts.
