  • So, 6AN8's are kaput

    Except for eBay etc.
There seems to be a few for sale.

Working on an Ampeg VT22, this one works but is a bit microphonic.

I have a spare that's weak I keep for testing.
I have a decent box of oddball tubes a friend gave me years ago his tv repairman dad had.
    But no 6AN8's.

    I think I have a bunch, I'll look.

If no luck there try the classifieds at http://antiqueradios.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=15
Post a WTB ad someone will likely have a few at a reasonable price.

Yeah, I got the aw8, aq8, 5t8, 6t8, even the 12br7 or bh7 that Marshall uses in their 1/5w amp.

              I got some oddballs alright.

I bet some people have a huge collection of oddballs.

I should really start getting rid of stuff I won't use like a bunch of Mullard 12AX7's years or Gold Lion KT88's I've amassed over the years.
Just keep a few for my own gear.

Well there's some things to consider there. I had a stash of about 25 UOS (used old stock ) tubes of many makes (Mullard, Telefunken, RCA, Bugle Boy, Sylvania, etc...) that I got from an old salvage electronics place for a buck or two a piece. I'd purchased something like twice that. All tested like new in the in house tube tester. I ended up with half of them testing well in an actual guitar amp. That's dwindled down to about seven tubes in about 15 years and none of those left are suitable for V1 in my higher gain amps and perhaps another five or six are still in service in my amps in positions other than V1. My point is, they never last as long as you estimate they will. So keep a generous margin in your culling efforts. And maybe take the time to test a bunch for microphony just to be sure you have a good supply for V1 where the better tubes make the most difference.
