    just some raw data/impressions/things noticed...

    -grounding scheme looked a bit weird intuitively (from a tube amp perspective) so changed it a little bit. (Specifically, ground point at the input as a star goes to output jack, also to pots, also towards ground trace at input. Using isolated switching jack at input--the sort where it's basically a DPDT--and switching batt negative in to ground circuit here. A ground wire goes from the sw. terminal to 470 ohm ground on PCB. Was kind of guessing but seems to work okay.)

    -built positive supply version with 2N5087 for Q1, 2N4401 for Q2&3 (had them already)

    -tried flipping orientation of Q1 (unit works both ways with a slight difference in sound), +18V supply, different control settings, gtr. vol. tone settings but so far the most significant change to make it sound like the sound clips from "boutique" versions (and Hendrix recordings--how could I forget!!! doH!) was using matched diodes (found info in ampage archives to match them using diode function on DVM). Noticeably better effect after installing the matched diodes. Stronger effect on neck pickup but okay on bridge PU as well. Rolling down the gtr.'s tone control makes effect work better (maybe necessary). (Got the idea that maybe a tone control to roll off highs on the octavia itself might be better.) Sort of seems a softer touch can bring out the octave effect more. Fuzz was perhaps better at 9V(need to try again to see). Used 1kA for gain (couldn't find a lin taper in my parts stash--perhaps a better adjustment range can be gotten with linear?).

    -using apparently the older version PCB. My advice if you have misaligned indents for the centers is to repunch them. I went ahead and drilled a misaligned hole and had to cut a bit of the PCB mount. No big deal though.

    The doubling (octave up) effect really works best with a sine wave signal, therefore playing above the 10th fret with the neck pickup will give the best sound. Turning down the guitar tone control will also help the doubling. The gain control needs to be set low to emphasize the doubling.

    The little used sitar sound of these pedals works best when playing on the lower frets with the bridge pickup and picking near the bridge. The gain control must be at a lower setting as well.

      thanks Bill. You can get the octave effect elsewhere on the neck somewhat but it definitely is stronger around there. I will check out the sitar thing.

        goofed around with it for a little bit and find Q1 backwards (Q1 emitter going to Q2 base) sounds better to my ear subjectively speaking (apparently this is electronically the wrong way around). Sounds like "Fire". Also tried a 2SA640 for the heck of it. What I had in there (the 2N5087) sounded better and for whatever reason the 2SA640 didn't work backwards. I gather from the tone control rolling off business that the effect works better if you feed it more fundamental than the harmonics. Is there anything to make the effect stronger like using specfic gains or something?

        also, forgot to ask... Can I just plop in a PNP Germanium transistor in Q1 position to try? (Reading a little on the Helios console which is apparently where most of the circuit originates and apparently (the early ones I'd guess) used Ge transistors. Probably makes no significant difference but I used a tant for the input .1uF and polystyrenes for the 150pF and 1nF copied from a pic of a Helios module unit.

          okay tried a PNP Ge for Q1 real quick (2SB415) and it works. Gain is lower and the octave effect seems weaker, so I guess I need to use one with a higher gain.

            according to the seller, the item he is selling (Chicago Iron Octavia) has been tweaked to match the sound of his original Tychobrahe Octavia. What I can gather from the pics in the auction are added capacitance for the 100uF going to the gain ("Intensity") pot, the 33uF coupler to the transformer, and a polystyrene instead of a ceramic for the 1n0(1000pF), plus a bigger transformer (I'm guessing it's the larger wattage version of the 42TM0(11 or 12--I forget) which was 42TU## IIRC). Bit strange-looking the way he did it (leads out from the PCB), but perhaps he was trying to obtain an exact non-standard value. Anyway, tried tack soldering a 22uF to the 100uF for approx. 122uF (interestingly close to 125uF on the Helios schematic) and raised the 33uF to 47uF (again on the Helios track since that schemo shows 50uF). Left everything else alone, Si transistors back in, 18V supply. Looked like the increase should give more gain, and subjectively basically the same (nothing earth-shattering...) but I like it a bit better, maybe a little easier to get the octave effect (Intensity not maxed out, gtr. tone rolled off). Tried the faux-sitar which can be gotten picking really close to the bridge with more treble. The sound (not the sitar effect) reminded me of this clip I saw on youtube:
