  • My New Pedalboard (+ a problem)

    Hi All

Been making pedalboards for a while, on and off, but I appear more often on amp forums. The latest creation is a triumph of experience over effort. Had to share it, but also have a problem with it. It's basically an astraboard flightcase, with effects on top af a 2 mm aluminum sheet, and a home made adjustable power supply beneath. Whole lot is earthed to the base, but not all the effects bodies are earthed.

(I'll try to replace the poor quality photos tomorrow, but you get the idea...)

Power supply is toroidal transformer into LM317, should be good for at least 1.5 A, and I've put an IEC mains socket on one corner of the board for quick hookup. I built the power supply some years ago, and it has adjustable voltage and star grounding.

Effects are all velcro mounted (SERIOUS velcro) with the exceptions of the tuner and the RAT. Effects chain goes:

    Lovetone Meatball
    MXR Dynacomp
Ibanez TS10 (much modded, thanks RG!)
    Proco RAT II
    MXR Phase 90
    EH Small Clone
    EH Electric Mistress (mains powered)
Roger Mayer Voodoo Vibe (Parallel into tuner with amp)

Everything works really well, except that the RAT is a bit noisy when switched on (hisses). I'm thinking earth loop (as it's bolted to the chassis). Which earth do I lift first? Power supply, or one of the signals? All is quiet in bypass (surprisingly so), so I'm thinking it's probably a power supply loop that's causing problems.

I've made a few FX boards, but this is only the second one I've made for myself. Took me 6 weeks to make my idea of the perfect setup, and I'd recommend it to anyone. First gig with it on Saturday and I really can't wait. If anyone wants help or advice, like I say, I've made a few. Any help with the noisy RAT much appreciated.

    Liam

Does the RAT hiss outside the pedalboard?
    Nice case!

      Nice case!
      Thanks!

Does the RAT hiss outside the pedalboard?
That's got to be the thing to do I guess. I'll take it out of the case later today and try it with/without power supply / battery and earth to the case.

        Ok, new problem.

Every time I get the pedalboard set up to check if the RAT hisses when I remove it, I plug in to check how much hiss there is. About 3 hours later I'm still playing, but have run out of time to unbolt the floor and unscrew the RAT. Hopefully this will wear off with time!
