Convert Ernie Ball VP JR to stereo

I have an Ernie Ball VP JR that I'd like to make stereo. I'm capable of doing all of the mechanical and electronic work, but I don't know if this is physically possible. Does anyone know if you can fit Ernie Ball's dual gang pot in the space of the original single gang?

I've built footswept pedals with dual-ganged pots, and I have to say the mechanism is just not all that dual-pot friendly. It will work, to be sure, but the amount of lateral pressure applied makes the pot prone to crackling, unless the assembly is just right.

Another alternative is to use a single pot in the EB-VP assembly to control two electronic attenuators.
