  • Tone stacks in Fender SS amps...

    While looking through the schematics of some recent Fender solid state amps, I noticed a variation in tone stack design.

    For example, here is one with a tone stack similar to the older Fender BF/SF tube amps:

    On the other hand, a whole series series of amps (e.g Frontman, Champion, Princeton, etc) use a different tone stack, for example:

    Any idea why there is such variation in design? The reason I ask is that I have a Frontman series amp that has too much high end even with the treble control set to "1"; if it will make a difference, I am considering modding the tone stack to a more conventional configuration to make the amp more usable.

    The Roc Pro tone stack is like the standard Blackface controls, the other is more similar to the Tweed era tone stacks. You can check out this tone stack calculator. Changing the values of components by double clicking on them will help you understand what's going on.
