  • Gibson ES 150 volume issue

    High all,

I just acquired an old Gibson ES 150, and had a question about the volume.

How loud does these normally get? This one sounds normal and pretty good (I'm guessing that its normal because I've never played through one of these before) in the sense that its clean then eventually breaks up past 5 or 6. But it just seems that the volume overall is rather low. I was assuming that it would be at least as loud as a tweed deluxe, but this one is much more quiet than that. I've switched out the power tubes and rectifier with set I know works fine, but it doesn't change the output at all.

It also might be worth mentioning that a slight burning smell was radiating out with the old set of tubes. When I replaced the rectifier and the power tubes, it lessened and all I can smell is tube burn.

Is this normal, or is something wrong? Could the output transformer be going?

Many thanks for any help you guys might provide!
    -Matt
