  • Clipping ciruit idea: Good? Bad?

So, in looking at diagrams for overdrive/distortion boxes, there seems to be two two main ways clipping is achieved. The first being the Tube Screamer method: diodes in the negative feedback loop of an opamp, for a soft, gradual clip. The other method seems to be diodes placed after the opamp, connecting from the signal out to ground, providing a hard clip.

Why has nobody ever combined the two? I would think you could get some potentially tasty distortion sounds if you tuned the combination of these two types of clipping circuits just right to play nice with one another.

They have. One example that comes to mind is the DOD FX53 Classic Tube.
