  • Transformers for 5E7? Edcor?

I'm trying to shop for transformers for a 5E7 build. The only document that references part numbers is the Weber layout that calls for:

    Power W022798
    Output W404248
    Choke W014684

Weber shows similar numbers for Heyboer and Tubes and More uses a similar number for their power transformer recommendation P-TF22798. Searching for transformers for a "5E7" turns up a few more numbers for the power transformer but nothing for the output or choke:

    40-18029 (Magnetic Components)
    P-T290DX or just 290DX (Hammond)
    125P5D

Some sites refer to the "large" and "small" Fender chokes. Which goes into the 5E7? What are the original Fender numbers or specs that I need to be looking for?

After reading good things about the high quality and low prices of Edcor transformers, I want to see what they have to offer. Nothing there references compatible circuits or replacement cross-references. There are a lot of close-but-not-exact matches on their site.

I think the 5E7 power transformer has 325-0-325 secondaries ar 200mA. It also has 6.3, 5 and 50V taps. How critical are those values? Edcor has a 340-0-340 unit but at only 120mA. And it's lacking a 50V tap.

Has anyone figured out which Edcor products, if any, will work with the 5E7 circuit? I could write and ask them but I expect they're going to claim no knowledge of a 5E7 circuit and want to know more than I do about the specs for these devices.

    Thanks.

5e7 needs a 360-0-360 200mA PT. And you'll need a 200 mA choke as well (so it's definitely "large"), if you intend to build 5e7 verbatim (choke carries all the current, plate, scrren and preamp). I like the sound better if I connect the plates to the first filter cap, so the choke could be smaller (40-50 mA will do)

Thanks, Frus! Yes, I am trying to stay as close to the original circuit as possible without going overboard on historical accuracy.

This has been one of the more frustrating aspects of planning this project so far. After a little sleep and more reading, I see where Weber's W022798 shows 360-0-360 secondary voltage as you said.

What's confusing are the various "equivalents" with different voltages:
Weber W022798 (as shown on their layout): 360-0-360
Weber's Heyboer alternative HY022798: 370-0-370 (according to a post on another site)
      Hammond's 290DX equivalent to 022798 and 125P5D: 325-0-325
      Magnetic Components' 40-18029 equivalent to 022798 and 125P5D: 355-0-355
      Ceriatone's layout for the 5E7: 340-0-340

I don't see how these can all be "equivalent" with such wide voltage differences. And that's just the power transformers.

If 360-0-360 is what I need, I found the Edcor XPWR002-120 that's pretty close except that it has a 60V secondary where I thought I needed 50V (per the Ceriatone layout). Does this look right:

      XPWR002-120 Primary: 120Vrms, 60Hz
      720V, 220mA Center Tapped
      60V, 800mA
      6.3V, 7A
      5.0V, 4A

Will any 200mA choke do? How about this one? Although it's more expensive than the Heyboer HY404248.

What is the input impedance and power specs for the output transformer? I'm thinking that's 4K and 40 watts.

        Jack,
Which transformer did you go with? I'm asking because I'm contemplating building a 5e7. I don't quite understand frus's statement that the hv secondary needs to be 200 ma. Most blackface Fender's are 200 ma (the 2 6l6 amps with 6 preamp tubes and a 5u4/gz34). My calculations say the 5e7 is nowhere near that (135ma).
