  • DC resistance of a two string pickup

    Hello,

I'm windind pickups for a homemade 4 string bass and I'm planning to separate the strings in 2.
I want to wind two pickups of two strings who will go separately (two outputs) in two different amps.

The pickups will be single coils with single A5 rods.
Since I saw that the fender jazzbass pickup have around 10000 turns, I was planning to go for that and to have an approximate fiberboard spacing of 17/32 of inch.

But that is not why I'm posting.

Now if I think in terms of DC resistance, I should (almost) double the number of turns to get the same DC resistance (compared to a 4 string pickup).
First question : Is it correct to think this way ?

    Then second question
If I think in terms of sound, will I get approximately the same sound with :
    - a 2 string pickup that has 20000 turns (a little less because the length is not strictly divided by two)
    and
    - a 4 string pickup of the same characteristics but with 10000 turns ?

I hope I'm making myself clear...
    Thank you,

    Julien

    Hi Julien:
On the turns, a turn is a turn.
So if you have a 1,2, or 4 sting coil.
One turn is a turn for each and all of them.
So one coil for all 4 strings 10,000 turns.
2 coils per string, still 10,000 turns.

Explain how you are building the 2 coil pickup.
    Sounds like a P-bass pickup?

      Thank you big tee.
It makes sense, and this is one more reason to see that DC resistance does not say much about a pickup.

My pickups will be very simple. It will be strat pickups but with higher rods and a higher bobbin.
Each two string pickup will go to a volume, then to an output.

I hope to get more clarity for some chord playing... and I want to get spatialization effects...
