Perhaps collateral damage from software update yesterday...? I remember how controversial it was when first introduced. "If someone is too lazy to post 'I agree'..."
But no sense adding a "ditto" post every time you agree with a post.

    Hope it comes back!

    Steve A.

P.S. Note the addition of a small "top" button at the bottom of each page... hooray!
Hmmm... is "quick navigation" button new, too?

    More Speculatin'

Although we generally use the 'like' button to show appreciation for actionable information or a good wisecrack, I think its real purpose is to help GoogleSpy determine what products to advertise. Maybe they gave up on parsing how to sell "Thanks, Enzo."

Oh, so it´s a "new feature"?
I missed it but since a couple days ago I downgraded from FF60 something which I hated to FF56 , I thought my browser was dumb, so I didn´t ask.

    What's wrong with FF60?
I guess I've already adapted to it!
I remember some changes, way back when, but don't remember what issue it was?

    Like post #13!

Imagine a Like post for every time we'd use the button... the Trump thread would have 2,500 more posts! That gets an UnLike.

Nope, one's enough. Just like it was. Occasionally someone would post "If I could give it a dozen likes I would" or something like that. Fair enough way to express thorough enthusiasm.

    How about I agree/ I disagree?

    Then everything gets voted on.

How's that for a can of worms.

It´s not just the Browser itself, you can adjust to changes, but the main point is that old add ons (up to FF56 compatible) do not work with the "> FF56" one.

For most there was a new version, ... considerably dumbed down, and do NOT work AT ALL.

One VERY VERY useful add on, which I use for way more than it´s "official" use is Ad Block Plus.
It included a tool called: "show blockable items".

Does not look like much but it´s the Pandora´s Box key

There are lots of pages (more and nore everyday) with content blocked (Blogspot, some Forums, etc.) , they either demand registration (now over 50% of amp or whatever images are in damned Pinterest), or do not allow right click to select , say, a picture (say official VOX pages), You Tube needs special software to download content (which in due time requires registration, often "$1 symbolic charge requiring to surrender CC data", the works.

Clicking OLD ABP "show blockable items" shows direct links to *all* images in the page, all "movies" (MP4, FLV, SWF, etc.)

So, in, say, The Vox Showroom, where right clicking anywhere to get an image is answered by "no right clicking allowed", ABP gives me *all* images (and everything else, it´s a way improved and *searchable* Page Source View if you wish), I ask to show only ".jpg" and there they are.
I can right click any I like and it offers to "open in new tab".
Once it´s "alone" on the new tab, "it´s mine".

    A POWERFUL digging tool.

The new dumbed one does *just* what it promises: gets rid of "most" Ads by searching an externally supplied list of "spam sites" BUT allows a lot of, say, "Google Sponsored Ads" which *they* find "safe" and "I would be delighted to read, Adwords and all the other tracking software told them so" ... and which of course defeats its purpose.
As a side note, the list contains only what "they" know ... but has no clue and so does not block a ton of cheesy inapproppriate Argentine ads which I hate.
Old one allowed me to block whole Domains he he, new one does allow so "sort of", I have to dig deep, 3 or 4 levels at least, to reach a page where "I" can edit the "bad guys list" they subscribed me to.

That alone is worth keeping the old one as long as possible.

Same with a couple other Add Ons which as I said do not work any more with "modern" FF, such as very useful Block Script.

    EDIT.
Example: http://www.voxshowroom.com/uk/amp/index_SS_korg.html does NOT allow right clicking, so it´s impossible to select and download an amp picture ... or any other content.
    Try it yourself.

BUT I invoke ABP (old version), "blockable items"
*** Hey!!! WTF!!!! the damn ABP self updated (without asking) on May 20 to fresh (lobotomized) 3.1 version!!!! ***
I am NOW removing it and reloading the old one !!!
    Stay tuned.
    .........
Ok, had to also downgrade ABP from 3.1 to 2.9 which DOES allow to "show blockable items", browsed the list of "images", opened this one in a new tab and here it is:

    I see.
I use uBlock Origin, in stock form.
It does everything I need, and it doesn't slow down the browser.
I run fairly stripped down Linux, so can see most of what is going on.
I set cache to dump on closure.
All my documents are kept in passworded files and folders.
My linux updates upgrades FF automatically.
I used to use custom settings, found it easier to just use it stock.
Keep using the old one as long as you can.
For me I like new fast laptops, and new fast free software.

I'm not sure because I'm not on facebook, but I thought maybe the 'likes' were tied in to facebook likes. If so, good riddance I guess.
I have facebook blocker and all their scripts blocked via Noscript, so I'm not going to argue in favour of that 'like' button if it's tied in to facebook.

No, they're not. There's a separate thingy on top of each thread for that specifically.

We could go all Miss Manners on it. Instead of a button, we write a nice little hand-written note of thanks. Mail it.

Me too. I wonder if there's some reason the like button went away. Somebody's gotta knock on tboy's office door. We have two minor matters to resolve, this and ah . . . . the other one - that is, if it doesn't resolve itself soon.

And what about rating threads? I'm guessing that was a joke.

I agree on the two issues.
The rate a thread, is the stars button at the top of the thread.
I just gave this one a five star rating.
The other issue will probably get resolved, hook or crook. lol

I don't think we should ever pester tboy for anything!!! About three or four into the original incarnation of this forum he found himself wishing to reorganize his priorities and tried find someone else to be the new site janitor. No one stepped up. They probably wouldn't now either. He just turned, shoulders slumped and altruistically scooched his feet back to his desk to keep right on maintaining the site for the next twenty years!!! My point is just that I'm eminently grateful that the site is still here at all. Someday tboy will NEED to reorganize his priorities and the site could well vanish. That will be sad for many of us that have made this place a regular stop in our daily lives for better than two decades, but nothing lasts forever. Anyway, anything tboy is willing to give is enough for me for as long he's willing. If the "like" button is something he chooses not to address right now, or ever, so be it. And three cheers for tboy!

Now... When the inevitable DOES happen and we find ourselves wondering why site maintenance is running so long, only to eventually discover that the site's not coming back, we should have a plan. Of course some of us are members of other forums and we would find members here and there, but it won't be THIS site and the group would only ever be partly reassembled. So here's an idea When that which is too horrifying to mention again actually happens we all converge on another site. One chosen site, and basically just take over. Obviously we couldn't run the other members out (right away or all at the same time ) but we could certainly dominate and claim it for ourselves. I'm certain of it.

But we would need to choose a site. Once we find ourselves as refugees the opportunity is gone.
