Question Digitech RP2000 "mdsper"

I bought a damaged rp2000 on ebay to replace the failing front foot switches on my original rp.
i got the damaged rp to work after a factory reset but it displays 'mdsper' and locks up when powered on, but will work again after reset.
I have seen many posts elsewhere about this and have not found any definite answers, I have a feeling it may be a internal battery failure, but I wanted other opinions before I tore into it.

Thanks

The battery is easy to replace.
So are the footswitches.
Digitech has the switches, and they actually sent me some of the actuators for free a while back.
