jazz bass rewind

I am rewinding a neck pickup for a friends 73 Jazz bass. The first coil I wound is a little fat at 8800 winds with 42awg. I put it in to see how it sounds. It sounds great and louder then the bridge, problem is the bridge pickup sounds like crap and has significantly smaller coil. I know he will not rewind the bridge. What would you do in a case like this?

Is 8800 wind too much for a 70s jazz bass p/u?

I'd get new parts to make my own bridge pickup. If the neck pickup sounds great, leave it alone. After you get all the parts, just take out the 73 bridge pickup and put the new one in. Keep the 73 pickup incase he wants to sell it down the road.

I wind my Jazz coils at around 9500 turns and they still sound fine but i do knock the magnets down a bit so that they aren't full strength. I'd try recharging the mags on the bridge and see what that does. You can also stick a piece of 1018 steel on the back side to see what that does for you.
