| Headroom - 22k dropping resistor
I have read here that a mod for gaining headroom on the 5E3 is to lower the value of the 22k dropping resistor thereby raising the voltage in the preamp section. Has any one tried this? How did it work for you if you did? Before I order parts, what value of resistor works well? Thanks all |

Generally a higher voltage on the preamp tube plate raises the headroom of that stage and therefore keeping the stage cleaner at the same volume level. The other way round you can turn the volume up a little more before the tone starts to compress. But I wouldn't expect too much of an increase of headroom overall. More a different tone due to gain. If you want to try it anyway I would start with a 15k or 10K /2w resistor. |
