    Noisy power tubes

I picked up an Ampeg R-12R reverberocket reissue today for a deuce, the owner had given up on it.

It had a low roar that could not be modulated by any combination of knob settings.

It took five minutes to sub the power tubes. Turns out that one Tung Sol 5881 reissue was the culprit-making all that noise. Stuck in a couple of Reflektor 6N3C power tubes from one of my other adventures and that cured the problem.

Has anyone ever had this problem of supposedly good power tubes generating an ungodly amount of hash and white noise?

Ever have a bad tube and wonder why someone told you it was a good tube?

First thing we usually tell people is to try new tubes.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

Well, these looked pretty new. Basic troubleshooting theory suggests that you eliminate the external, simple stuff first to get your baseline of known good components to work from. As it happened that's exactly what I did.

Used to live up your way back a few years ago, over south of K'zoo. Nice country.
