I'm looking at a 1953 Supro Airline lap steel. How do I determine if the pu is original? Thanks.

If you like the tone of it now, why wonder if the pick-up is original? Is it the style with two sets of three holes in the top cover? That's likely the original, except that the coil could have been re-wound at some point. The original pick-ups were on the bright side for tone I believe. The fact that it may or may not be original is a moot point, since there is no collector value on those. A good player though. You should try it and see if you like it (if possible) |

I haven't actually played it yet. Goin to check it out today. I figured the 2 sets of 3 holes would be all I need. Not lookin for any collectible value...just a first experience with the "Valco sound" all the lap steel cats talk about. I think the pu cover isn't original....plain white. Would sure love to find one of those cool black ones with Supro on it. Anyone with one they can part with let me know.
