holy crap thats expensive! Where did you buy them?
Guys,
I recently purchased a bunch of Alnico8 bars 2.5" x .5"x .125" and had to place a minimum order. I have a bunch of these left over and am willing to part with them for $9.00 a piece. If you buy 5 I'll knock a buck off each of them.
Just thought you guys might want some of these without having to buy a ton of them to experiment with them. I'm pretty sure you can PM me. Never really tried it.
Well I didn't pay $9 a piece. But I did have to order quite a few of them. I had a hard time finding a place to purchase them. I guess I could let them go for $8 a piece, but I have to make worth my time to ya know?
I think you are going to find that no one here pays more than $3 tops for a magnet.

I think I pay $0.95 for A5 and $.9 for A2.. Even American mags should be more than $3-4.
I'll trade you for some of my $9 keeper bars! :>
Just throwing it out there. I'm not trying to be anyone's supplier. I just had a few extra. I'm not trying to sell in bulk, I was only thinking one or two if someone wanted to experiment with them. I'm not trying to start a magnet selling business here.
The point is if you had to buy a bunch and don't need them, and want to make your money back, sell they for cost or a little over. What you are doing is trying to make it a profit off of them.
Maybe you can sell them on eBay.

Alnico is very different based on different manufacturers.. where are they from?
Well, the A8 bars do seem to cost more ... at least if you get them from AllStar. I haven't tried Sens for those or any other supplier. My first order for A8 bars (probably a couple of years ago) from AllStar was about $6 per bar for 10. I think I got it down to $3-$4 with a larger order, but would have to look it up. Nifty magnet though, depending on what you're trying to accomplish.
Of course I'm trying to make some profit. I don't want to give the stuff away for free. I marked them up $2 a piece. I'm not trying to rip anyone off, I just wanted to see if you guys wanted one. If you want a bunch, then call allstar magnetics. If you want one to experiment with, then I'll send you one... for $8. If I was trying to be a distributor I would sell them for just over cost. I'm not and have to repackage them and take them to the post office which is worth the extra $2 to stand in that god forsaken line. I'm just trying to save you guys the $75 minimum fee I had to pay... unless I got ripped off. In which case, dammit.
Not too many by you guys standards. I bought 20, but only have plans for about 6.
Allstar are middlemen, but you pay for service.
If I need just a few of something I order from them, but I cant justify paying 2-3 times the cost of the magnet when I buy 1500 magnets. If I buy from Allstar is $4500, if I buy from sens is $1500. I'd like to support the american company, but I just cant. I'd be an idiot to throw away 3 grand.
Holy crap, that's a huge difference. I don't buy that many at once. I'm just making my own pickups for my brother and I at the moment. We got tired of paying for Seymours retirement. I wanted the Alnico 8's because the ceramics were too harsh without a ton of wire on the bobbin. I haven't quite figured out the ceramics yet. I can't get the winding right but I haven't tried that hard either. I have heard the 8's are less harsh.
Belwar you really should speak to Neomax about prices as you costs for A2 and A5 bars costs would be cut dramatically! I won't post the prices on the forum but if you want a run down pm me and I'll let you know.
Their A8 bars depending on which grade you want are less than $3 per pcs. The A8 is the most expensive of all the Alnico bars even more than the most powerful LNGT72 (A9).
Yea. The first time was a bit scary. Shipping for 400 bars of various grade/size was about $100, as I recall. It was still $100-$200 cheaper overall than the quote I got for the same order from All Star. Rob has always been good to me and calls ever now and again to see if I need any magnets. If it was just $20-$30 bucks difference I'd support the US business, but when the gap is as big as it is it's difficult to make that decision - especially since they appear to be the same product.
Well you can listen to a Neomax A8 in my blindtest thread - it's the first pickup in each sample. Then a Neomax A9 is the 3rd sample but I understand this isn't of interest to many people.
I've used several so far and can't fault any of them. I personally think this magnet sounding different thing is down to companies selling 'Alnico 5' magnet when there is actually 4 different grades of that magnet, the 'Alnico 8' has 3 different grades etc.
I will be doing another blind test for my neck pickups later today in which the pickups use 2 other varieties from Neomax.![]()
My experience is that A8s are smooth all the way across the frequency spectrum. I'm still trying to pull more high end out of a current A8 pickup design I'm working on.
