noobie queston about humbuckers

i just wound a stewmac bucker kit i used 44 gauge wire. i decided on 6800 turns per bobbin, the first bobbin read 8 k the second 7.3 k i was thinking it might of shorted out. i was thinking the tension was pretty much the same, after winding the second bobbin the first on read 7.7 k does taping lower the resistance.I'm not sure if i should rewind the lower bobbin or try it

Resistance, Taping, potting . . . all will have an effect on the reading.

44 is a thin wire so even though you think you are keeping tension the same it's very hard to tell. The other question is why would you think it shorted out? Did you have a break and join it? If it was run straight on without any breakage I can't see any reason why it would short.

Oh just as an example - my last humbucker started out reading around 17k but by the time it had been potted and taped it was nearer 16k . . .

If you're potting it, leave it. That's a nice offset between the coils. You may find your reading changes. Did you measure right after winding?
