| Peavey Classic 20 - Oops
Hi all - new to the forum and I don't really know much about how tube amps work. I've got a Peavey Classic 20 that isn't working. I took the tubes out of the amp while traveling, and then mistakenly put them back in the wrong slots. The EL84's where the 12AX7's should be, and vice versa. I turned on the amp, quickly smelled a burning smell and saw a little smoke so I turned the amp off. Later I realized the tubes were switched. I've put them back in the right spots, and turned the amp back on. No more smoke, but no sound either. I know a good tech I'm going to take it to, but any idea how bad this is? I'm hoping it's something simple... Thanks in advance. |

Sorry about your situation, I just think it's funny that you knew enough to take out the tubes while traveling so they don't break, but you forgot to check where the tubes go... haha. Best case scenario you only need to replace the 2 pre-amp tubes that you put into the power tube slot because the power running through them would kill it... Worst case scenario, you fried something... I don't know enough to actually know what you fried, ha. Good luck. Hope you get some real answers from some people on here. There are a lot who know what they are talking about. |

You put high voltage on a grid,pin 7 and the heater,pin 9 of the 12AX7.Possibly fried a couple of resistors associated with them,would explain the smoke.Take the amp to someone who can fix it.

OK, thanks for the replies. Sounds like it probably isn't too bad. I dropped it off at the repair shop yesterday.

You most likely also fried the internal fuses.
