I'm sorry, $429 is just obscene for an electric motor hooked to a variable resistor with an optical counter. Seems like you're paying more for that sexy decal and wood paneling.

You don't use variable resistors to control motor speed.. you use a motor speed control circuit. But yeah, it's quite expensive. It's more than the Schatten, and except for the back lit counter I see no added benefits. The back lit counter is nice though, that's a complaint I have with the Schatten. I have an LED book light positioned in front of mine. I think the decal is fugly.
